〜にあたって／〜にあたり

Meaning

Means on the occasion of doing something special. A formal expression stating the preparation or mindset appropriate before an important occasion or milestone. Used as in 「開会にあたり、ご挨拶申し上げます」.

Examples

新年を迎えるにあたって、目標を立てた In welcoming the new year, I set some goals.
開会にあたり、一言ご挨拶申し上げます At the opening, I would like to say a few words of greeting.
契約を結ぶにあたって、条件を確認した Prior to signing the contract, I confirmed the terms.
出発にあたり、注意事項を説明する Before departure, I will explain the precautions.
