〜ありさまだ

Meaning

Indicates that things went in a bad direction, ending up in such a sorry state. Mostly recounts an undesirable outcome with lament or exasperation. When 「ありさま」 is written in kanji, it is written 「有様」.

Examples

計画は次々と狂い、最後は誰も口をきかないありさまだった。 The plan went wrong one after another, and in the end no one would speak to each other.
散らかった部屋は、足の踏み場もない有様だ。 The messy room was in such a state that there was no place to step.
準備不足で、本番では台詞も忘れる有様だった。 Underprepared, he was in such a state that he forgot his lines during the performance.
