〜手前
Meaning
Indicates a situation where, conscious of others' eyes or one's own position, one has no choice but to act for the sake of appearances. Used when, having once said or undertaken something, one cannot back out.
Examples
- 大丈夫だと言った手前、今さら助けを求められない。 Having said it was fine, I cannot very well ask for help now.
- 後輩の手前、弱音を吐くわけにはいかない。 In front of my juniors, I cannot afford to show weakness.
- 引き受けた手前、途中で投げ出すことはできない。 Having accepted the task, I cannot abandon it midway.
