Meaning

Expresses the condition that unless one does it, the latter cannot hold either. States that one cannot proceed until the premise is met. Followed by a negative conclusion.

Examples

実物を見ないことには、買うかどうか決められない。 Unless I see the actual item, I cannot decide whether to buy it.
資金が集まらないことには、計画は始められない。 Unless funding is secured, the plan cannot begin.
