〜たるもの

Meaning

Expresses the obligation or mindset that a person in such a superior position or status naturally ought to behave a certain way, or must not do certain things. Attached to a noun, as in 「教師たる者」, it states the attitude befitting that position. It also has a usage in the form 「〜たるに値する／値しない」, judging whether someone is worthy of that position or evaluation. It shares the same origin as 「〜たる〜」, which links one noun to another.

Examples

教師たるもの、学生に対して常に公平な態度で接しなければならない。 A teacher must always treat students with fairness.
上に立つリーダーたるもの、困難な状況でも冷静さを失ってはいけない。 A leader must never lose composure even in difficult situations.
彼の無責任な言動は、一国の指導者たるに値しない。 His irresponsible words and actions are unworthy of a national leader.
