〜ほど

Meaning

Expresses an extreme degree of an action or state by citing an extreme example or comparison. 「死ぬほど疲れた」 means being so tired that one feels close to dying. Attached to a noun, as in 「山ほどある」, it indicates a very large quantity. At the end of a sentence it takes the form 「〜ほどだ」.

Examples
  1. 昨日は一日中歩き回って、死ぬほど疲れた。 Yesterday I walked around all day and got tired to death.
  2. 面接の前は、食事がのどを通らないほど緊張していた。 Before the interview, I was so nervous I couldn't even swallow food.
  3. 夏休みの宿題がまだ山ほど残っている。 I still have a mountain of summer homework left.
  4. 駅前の新しい店は人気で、開店前から行列ができるほどだ。 The new shop by the station is so popular that a line forms even before it opens.
