〜わりに（は）
Meaning
Expresses that the degree naturally expected from a certain matter does not match the actual degree. It states an evaluation that, given that condition, the result is unexpected. Used as in "looks young for their age," pointing out the gap between the standard and the reality.
Examples
- 値段が高いわりには、味は普通だった For how expensive it is, the taste is just average.
- 年のわりには、ずいぶん落ち着いている For his age, he is quite mature.
- あまり勉強しなかったわりに、点が取れた Considering I did not study much, I scored well.
- 量が多いわりに、すぐに食べ終わった Despite the large portion, I finished eating quickly.
