〜ものの

Meaning

Indicates that, after once acknowledging what was stated before, a situation contrary to it follows. Equivalent to 「〜けれども」, but a literary contrastive expression describing a gap where things do not unfold as expected.

Examples

申し込んだものの、当日は都合がつかなかった I applied, but on the day I was unable to attend.
新しい機械を買ったものの、使い方がわからない I accepted the task, but I have no confidence at all.
頭ではわかっているものの、なかなか実行できない I bought a new machine, but I do not know how to use it.
