Meaning

Describes a state as if about to do something at any moment. A written-style expression metaphorically emphasizing an intense state close to that, though it does not actually happen.

Examples
  1. 彼女はあふれんばかりの笑顔で出迎えてくれた。 She greeted me with a smile so broad it seemed about to overflow.
  2. 観客は割れんばかりの拍手で名演をたたえた。 The audience praised the performance with applause so loud it seemed the hall would split.
