Home N2 Grammar Pattern List 〜たら〜たで

N2

〜たら〜たで

Meaning

Means "if a certain state is realized, that very fact then creates a separate problem or trouble." It expresses resignation or grumbling that even if the desired situation comes about, in the end it is still unsatisfying, and that things are troublesome whichever way they turn out. Repeating the same word before and after is basic. 「〜なら〜で」「〜ば〜で」 are variants with the same meaning, with only the conditional form changed.

Examples
  1. お金がないと困るが、あったらあったで使いすぎてしまう。 Having no money is a problem, but when you have it, you end up overspending.
  2. 暇だと退屈だが、忙しかったら忙しかったで文句を言う。 When idle you're bored, but when busy you complain.
  3. 受かったら受かったで、今度は学費の心配が出てくる。 Even if you pass, now the worry about tuition comes up.
