〜たところ

Meaning

Expresses that, as a result of doing an action, an unexpected fact comes to light or things develop differently from what was expected. A literary expression describing a discovery or outcome in the sense of 「〜してみたら、実は…だった」. Distinct from the N1 expression 「〜たところで」 (hypothetical contrast).

Examples

問い合わせたところ、すでに在庫切れだった When I inquired, it was already out of stock.
急いで駆けつけたところ、会はもう終わっていた When I rushed over, the gathering had already ended.
調べてみたところ、原因は単純なミスだった When I looked into it, the cause turned out to be a simple mistake.
