〜一方（で）

Meaning

Expresses contrasting two matters side by side: on one hand it is like this, on the other it is like that. There is also a usage indicating that another action is carried out in parallel with one action. Describes contrast or simultaneous progress.

都市の人口が増える一方で、地方は減り続けている While the urban population is increasing, the rural population keeps declining.
彼は厳しい上司である一方、頼れる相談相手でもある He is a strict boss, yet at the same time a reliable person to consult.
