〜にひきかえ

Meaning

Contrasts two things and states that one differs greatly from the other. Usually takes the former as a baseline and rates the latter higher or lower; a contrastive expression carrying the speaker's subjective judgment. 「ひきかえ」 is written 「引き換え」.

Examples

去年の不作にひきかえ、今年は豊作に恵まれた。 In contrast to last year's poor harvest, this year we were blessed with abundance.
兄が社交的なのに引き換え、弟はひどく内気だ。 While the older brother is sociable, the younger one is extremely shy.
