〜ものを

Meaning

Expresses dissatisfaction, regret, or reproach that one could originally have done so, but in reality it did not turn out that way. It is used with a feeling of regret toward a result that runs counter to expectations, as in 「〜ばよかったものを」. The sentence is sometimes left unfinished at the end, as in 「黙っていればよかったものを」, leaving a lingering sense of dissatisfaction or regret.

Examples

早く医者に行けばよかったものを、我慢するから悪化したのだ。 If only he had gone to the doctor sooner, but he endured it and it got worse.
一言相談してくれれば手を貸したものを、なぜ黙っていたのか。 If only you had consulted me, I would have helped, so why did you stay silent?
謝れば済むものを、彼は意地を張って口をきかなかった。 An apology would have settled it, but he stubbornly refused to speak.
一言わびを入れれば角が立たずに済んだものを。 A word of apology would have kept things smooth—if only.
