〜ように（目的）

Meaning

Expresses a purpose: doing something aiming for that outcome to occur. Attached to non-volitional verbs, or to potential/negative forms, it states that one does something so that a certain state will be realized. Distinguished from "〜ために," which follows volitional actions.

Examples

後ろの席まで聞こえるように、大きな声で話した I spoke loudly so that it could be heard even in the back seats.
忘れないように、手帳にメモしておく So as not to forget, I make a note in my notebook.
風邪をひかないように、暖かくして寝た So as not to catch a cold, I kept warm and went to sleep.
