Meaning
Expresses a judgment or resolve that, since something is established as fact, it must naturally be so. As in 「学生である以上」, a somewhat formal expression stating duty or determination on the basis of one's position or the facts.
Examples
- 約束した以上は、必ず守らなければならない Once you've made a promise, you must keep it.
- 学生である以上、学業を優先すべきだ As long as you are a student, you should prioritize your studies.
