Meaning
Indicates being driven, against one's wishes, into a situation where one has no choice but to do so due to circumstances. A formal expression used from the passive standpoint. The causative side is 「〜を余儀なくさせる」.
Examples
- 大雪のため、列車は運休を余儀なくされた。 Due to heavy snow, trains were forced to suspend service.
