〜なり

Meaning

Indicates that as soon as one action is done, the next action or state immediately occurs. A literary expression, often used when the subject of the first clause takes an unexpected action.

Examples
  1. 彼は部屋に入るなり、ソファに倒れ込んだ。 As soon as he entered the room, he collapsed onto the sofa.
  2. その知らせを聞くなり、彼女はわっと泣き出した。 The moment she heard the news, she burst into tears.
  3. 子どもは母親の顔を見るなり、安心して泣きやんだ。 As soon as the child saw his mother's face, he calmed down and stopped crying.
