Meaning
Indicates that as soon as one action is done, the next action or state immediately occurs. A literary expression, often used when the subject of the first clause takes an unexpected action.
Examples
- 彼は部屋に入るなり、ソファに倒れ込んだ。 As soon as he entered the room, he collapsed onto the sofa.
- その知らせを聞くなり、彼女はわっと泣き出した。 The moment she heard the news, she burst into tears.
- 子どもは母親の顔を見るなり、安心して泣きやんだ。 As soon as the child saw his mother's face, he calmed down and stopped crying.
