〜ものだ／〜ものではない
Meaning
States the inherent nature or general truth of things, meaning 「〜というのが普通だ」 (that is how things normally are). It also expresses nostalgic reflection on the past, as in 「よく遊んだものだ」, or advice and admonition that something should not be done, as in 「人を疑うものではない」.
Examples
- 時間がたつのは早いものだ Time really does pass quickly.
- 子どものころは、よく川で泳いだものだ When I was a child, I often used to swim in the river.
- 人の悪口を言うものではない One should not speak ill of others.
